Story Board

The two main characters have been paired together by there teacher as he is sick of them arguing in class and to teach them to get on, he makes them work together in a project. This idea is relatable to people as we have all had someone we don't get on with and had to deal with. The girl suggest that they should make cakes for the charity event in school. The boy is not happy with the idea as he believes it is girly and doesn’t want to. There is also a person that is scared to do things because of social influences and what people will think. The teacher agrees with the girl that they should make cakes. In the begging the two can not get along at all and fight over everything from what side, what bowl ect ect. This allows us to create some comedy within in the film as we can make there fights entertaining with food fights. As time goes on and they spend more time together they begin to talk and share things with each other and develop feelings for one another with out releasing. This part of the story is to show that feelings can change between people and how they act. It also shows romance which attracts are target audience.

Evaluation of Thunderstruck

Thunderstruck

After remaking an existing trailer we can finally understand how much effort, time and hard work is put into it. We didn't really plan this as we went into it just trying to recreate what we had previously seen in the existing trailer. We knew the characters we wanted to use as it is a basketball film and a member of our group plays basketball so we could use him and we asked another basketball player if he would mind playing.

What went well:

We thought what we actually filmed on the day was a fair amount we had sorted our the type of shots we wanted and how we wanted them shot. We knew we needed some shot of each character performing well and the performing badly. We knew the location we were going to use and as it was only a remake one we decided to film in school to keep things simple and saved us hiring out the cameras and tripods.

Even better if:

It would of been even better if we could of had extra characters and extras so we could of had people in the audience to make it look authentic. If we had a better location instead of the school gym, it could of made it look more professional. Maybe if we had drawn out a storyboard for the remake of the trailer, it could of made it easier to film and plan the shots we needed and how we needed to shoot them.

Make Up & Costume Design

Looking at the makeup and costumes of similar films we can see what factors our film needs to have for it to be effective. The makeup of the female character needs to be simple yet feminine.

This type of makeup id say is not appropriate for our film and this tries to indicate that the characters is very girlie as she has used a lot of pale pinks and her blonde hair makes her look quite innocent. We want our character to have a different side to her, she needs to be tough, independent and strong this makeup doesn't give that impression.

The costume we want to remain pretty simple for the female character as she does like to bake cakes and doesn't dress up too much but then you see her towards the end of the film and she has transformed she is in a dress and her makeup and hair is done, which makes her character grow and you can see the difference from the cake baker and the real woman.

Certificate Rating

We've decided that our film is going to be a '15' rating. Although it is quite light hearted, there is a love interest in the trailer which could lead to sexual parts during the film and we think if you are over 15 it would be suitable for you to go and watch.

Limitations on Audience

The type of trailer we are making creates limitation on who will come and view it also. We don't just magically expect the public to want to see it we have to make that happen. Its restricted that males might not want to go and see it as its a cooking film that includes romance, so unless you go and see it with a loved one its unlikely that we will get a large amount of males viewing it.

The fact that also our film is British, its hard for Britihsh films to make it into the box office as we dont have as good reputation comapred to American films. We need to make our trailer appeal so a global audience and not just limit it to a british audience.

Production Logo

Designing and researching company logos some are very distinctive and we decided we wanted ours to stand out from the rest. We've decided that we are going to combine the names of our group into the logo and have HJDA Entertainment the first part is our initials. All film and production companies have logos so we started looking at some existing logo to get some inspiration and some ideas.
The following images are of existing film and production company logos.

Some of these logos are more common than others and some are very well known such as Warner Bros. and Mirimax some are less known companies but there logos all share some of the same characteristics.
To try and start to design a logo we decided what we wanted it to have, we didn't want it to be too fussy so we wanted to keep it simple  as it would be more likely that people would remember and recognize it. We obviously wanted the name of a film company with maybe a picture or symbol to go with it. We want it to be interesting and eye catching but not too much to confuse or distract the audience but we want them to remember it.

Audience Research

From interviewing people roughly our target audience age, i asked them why they would go and see certain films and what attracts them to the trailer and which aspects appeal to them and which ones don't.

Males aged over 25 tend to have interest in action packed films such as James Bond and ones which involve fast cars. Males ages under 25 have similar interest but relate more to sports films which involve football for example or action as well and also fantasy.

Looking at what females are often interested in, females over the age of 25 tend to like Romantic comedies with a stereo type 'good looking' male lead that they can find attractive. Females under the age of 25 tend to also like romantic films with a younger male lead who they can have a 'crush' on.

I interviewed a range of people asking them what their favorite trailer was and why? What attracts you to a trailer and whether music and sound where a big part in you going on to later view the film?

The answers ranged her are a few of them;

Savannah: Her favorite trailer was Hunger games because it makes her want to go see the film, it looks interesting and shows you parts that make you want to see more. She likes action packed films and says if the music and sound is bad it makes the film look boring and she wouldn't go and see it.

Millie: Her favorite trailer is Easy A and one of the reasons why she liked it so much was because of the music in it, also the actors in it as she loves Emma Stone, She thinks music and sound is very important in a trailer and it gives you an idea of what type of film its going to be, for example if the music is upbeat then the film will be upbeat.

Jordan: His favorite trailer is Inception This is because he likes gripping music and suspense, he likes the cliff hangers in the trailer and he agrees music is a huge part to why a trailer.

Ollie: Ollie's favorite trailer is The Hobbit, he loves Lord Of The Rings, he would go see a film if the trailer was exciting and if he liked what the film was about, the music for him has to be dramatic for him to go and see it.

From these answers 2 from girls and 2 from boys shows a correlation in what type of films they like and it fits a certain stereotype but we have to take into consideration that it doesn't apply to everyone. By interviewing a certain amount of people limits our findings as we would need to take a general

Audience Research

Looking into different types of audience makes you think what ages group and type of person will our trailer appeal to. As our film is a romantic - comedy i think it will mainly have appeal to females, but not a particular age. Most females enjoy romantic films and they like to relate to there characters in the film and can sympathize with them.    Statistics show that females prefer romantic films compared to men and they are voted in the nations top 3 favorite film genres. The fact that our film also involves cooking which is not only females but also males passion is could bring men watching our film/ trailer.

These are some of the films who have given us ideas for our film mixing comedy and romance together creating a fun filled film that grabs the audience.

Filming the recreation of a trailer

We started filming the recreation of 'thunderstruck' and figured out what problems we my face in the real thing. The main problem was getting actors to agree to act in it. This we need to consider when filming our main task. Also using the camera on the tripod was difficult as we couldn't move it properly and so we had to use hand held and this led to some of the shots being unsteady. We need to take this into consideration when using the camera later on.

Planner for practice trailer of the remake of Thunderstruck

Planner:
"Dan is a professional basketball player with elliot hedge-porter a novice player trying to get better at basketball, so elliot wishes he has Daniel's powers and while this is being said, they both touching the ball and that's when everything starts to change. The Professional basketball players becomes rubbish as he misses several shots and Elliot Hedge-Porter becomes a great player, taking the ability and skills from Dan"

Props

The props that we are going to need to use are mostly kitchen utensils such as bowls, spoons, mixers, sinks etc also we are going to have to buy or bake cakes ourselves as we cant actually show the process of them cooking during the actual trailer.

By using these kind of props is gives the trailer authenticity make it look most professional and most like a real trailer. These props will be easy to get hold of and cheap to buy.

Casting

The casting for our trailer is simple as we only need a few main characters....  We need one male lead who is the potential love interest and one female lead who will be baking cakes.

The male lead need to fit a certain criteria:

  • Look quite manly, even thought he will be baking cakes he needs to have an attractive side as she falls for him
  • Muscly to fit the male stereotype of good looking
  • Even though he can be many he needs to have a sensitive side as he is baking cakes

The woman lead needs to fit a certain criteria:
  • She needs to look womanly and independent as she is trying to make it on her own
  • She has to have passion for something as her passion for cake making is huge

We may need some extra in the background etc for the cake off as it will look more authentic in the trailer. Also in a real trailer there wouldn't just be two characters.

Influences

Here is the trailer of the film 'the perfect man' in this film the main character is Hilary Duff her mum as a passion for cakes and her dream is setting up her own cake shop one day but along the way she falls in love. There is a cake off at the end and her mum ends up wining it and making her own shop.

This trailer has given us some ideas about how to shoot our trailer and the angles and camera movements which could be created, the type of things that could be included in our trailer and also how not to give too much away.

Location

The main location we will use for filming will be the food technology room in school this is the most authentic way of filming what we want. As there is a cooking competition taking place this is the most realistic place to shoot it. We first needed to ask permission to use this room in school as it is not being used at the moment but once we got permission is was fine.

Recreating a Trailer planning

The Story line to thunderstruck is that there's a person who is really good at basketball and then an underdog who is not so good. They swap abilities and the one who is not so good becomes amazing at basketball. We are going to try our best to make the remake as similar to the real thing with some changes as some parts we are unable to do.

Brain Storm

This is a brainstorm of what type of factors contribute to making a trailer and what a trailer includes. We've tried to include all the different genres and pick out common themes which occur during them.

Mood Board

This is the mood board we created to represent the trailer we are trying to make. As the film is about cakes we've made our mood board very food orientated and tries to stick to bright colors that would remind you of cakes.

One Sentence Pitch

Timeline of a Trailer

The Twilight Saga: Eclipse
0:12

The trailer first established shot sets the scenery for the film, it shows a a lot of trees and a lake in the middle. The weather looks dull and gloomy maybe suggesting that is it set in a place that gets worse weather and it might rain quite a lot. The music in the background of this shot is quite spooky, this may show the genre of the film creating a sense of creepy woods, dull, gloomy background and with the music just builds on the fact that the aim to it to be spooky.

0:16
The next shot is what you may assume are the two main characters, as the film is part of a sequel, so if you have watched the first two films you have some indication of what the film will be about. The way the characters are sitting might suggest that they have a romantic relationship and they are hugging and sitting very close which could mean that they may be boyfriend and girlfriend. Also the male character 'Edward Cullen' is speaking in the background saying that he 'promises to love her, every moment forever'

0:18

The next shot just confirms the thoughts on the shot before, it shows them very close and he is touching her arm which defiantly suggests that they are romantically involved. The music in the background suggest love as well, as it is quite slow and calming. The background you can see pretty flowers and an open wide space this could relate to their relationship that they are open with each other and share something special. The shot starts off on them close and slowly zooms out this is so the audience can see the whole length of them and you can see their body language which confirms what you are thinking in the pervious shot.

0:24

Again if you are a follower of these films you know what has happened in the previous ones and you know that they have promised the voltury that they will make her human. It is clear to them that she is still human and they are saying they don't give second chances. The way they are walking and what the scenery is like behind them and it seems as if they are walking they have some sort of mist behind them. This is to try and make them seem scary, with them in a line is to try and create a gang like look. The fact that a girl is leading the 'pack' suggests that she is scary and people are scared to question her.

0:30

The next shot is a shot to give the audience some information about what is behind the film and where it came from. It is informing us that it is from a world wide bestseller, if you haven't seen the previous films this gives you an appeal to go and watch it because it is from a best seller.

0:31

This shot shows the two leads in bed together, quite close she is asking him ' why he is so against her becoming like him' and the way he looks at her shows true love. The fact they ate intimate and in bed shows their relationship could be quite serious and he replies ' i know the consequences that it will bring' he is trying to protect her because he loves her.

0:38

0:39
These shots are trying to establish the relationship she has with the people. It first shows her and he dad, then her hugging her mum, these are all trying to make her feel guilty because if she changes herself all these people she loves and they love her she will loose.

0:43
The shot tells you that there could be a problem in the middle of the film as a second love interest appears telling her that she doesn't have to change for him and he loves her. The way he is holding her hand and looking into her eyes shows that maybe he genuinely does love her, he has real passion for what he is saying and this could be a potential love interest for him.

0:49
This is just a short shot informing us that now she has to make a choice. Does she pick the life with edward and loose her family or can she pick the life with Jacob and she doesn't have to change for him.

0:54

The mise en scene in this shot is very clever, is
shows a beautiful landscape in the background, and she is looking out to sea. This could suggest that she is trying to make that decision and she is indecisive and the relaxing, calming background is helping her trying to do this.

0:57
This shot is just informing the audience what date the film is released on. They use a continuing background whenever the trailer has words appearing on the screen.

1:06

This part of the trailer is a returning character from the previous films, that if you watched would know could cause masses of trouble. She is after Bella Swan and the action shot of her jumping may suggest that someone is chasing her and she is trying to get away from them. Bella is talking over the top of this shot saying' she's come back for me' this is distressing for both her and Edward and even Jacob as they are trying to protect her. The background in the shot is just adding on to a previous shot showing them in a creepy woods making it seem quite sinister, this is all adding towards the genre of the film.

1:20
This shot is showing that Jacob will 'fight for her, until her heart stops beating' the fact that he is topless is giving him the stereotypical look of a strong, young man who could be the hero. He is slightly to the left of the shot but your eyes still focus on him when looking at the shot.

1:26

1:30

These two short shots are just ending the trailer with the name of the film and finally the date it is released. This is so the last bit of information the audience gets is the date of release which will persuade them to go and see the film. IT sort of ends on a cliff hanger so it makes you want to go and see it. Most trailers do this because is creates demand for the film and leaves you wanting more.

Comparison of Trailers

The five trailers i have looked at all differ in some way, i have looked at films of different genre and that appeal to different audiences. By analyzing the trailers i can tell what characteristic join with the genre, audience, length etc. Some are common and are you can predict when they occur when others are not.

The first trailer i looked at was a film called 'the impossible' straight away you could tell it was a true story as it showed events from a disaster which is commonly reconsigned it was very fast pace as some of the other trailer such as the dark knight rises. There was a lot of action shown in the trailer and also emotion you could tell that it was going to create graphic events which could be distressing. The action films i looked at were all fast pace and showed snippets of action which made you want to watch the film, it gives you an overview of what the film has to offer and its potential. Some trailers do this more than others and i think that depends on how much you want to go and see the film after watching the trailer.

The other three trailers i looked at were more comedy and romantic films and again these trailers differed from the action ones, the trailers always had happy, upbeat music in the background which tried to represent the effect that the film was giving off. You can tell what type of film it was going to be right at the beginning of the trailer, Easy A you can tell is a girly film that some girls might be able to relate to, however '10 years later' is a film similar to american pie the reunion and can tell it is trying to appeal to middle aged people maybe early twenties who have recently left school or college and they may be able to relate to going back and re meeting their old school mates. Straight away you could tell it was humor as as he hits himself in the face, it tries to show you the best parts of the film so persuade you to go and see it. These three trailers compared to the first two i looked at differed a lot, the genre was different which played a major part in the differences between the trailers but 'the impossible' and ' the dark knight rises' have quick shots which are cut short so they show small snippets of what could be the potential best parts in the film, where the other three trailers were slower shots and showed more of what was actually happening in the film.

A lot of trailer have similar charasteristics and common themes and factors that bring them all together to form a good trailer, some are better than others depending on what kind of genre you like and what type of film suits you. Some trailers are more effective and i feel create a demand for people to go and see them where some are more boring and don't create a need for you to want to see more.

Trailer 5

The Dark Knight Rises

The music in the background is quite sinister and creates a creepy atmosphere, theres a brief statement about the film 'epic conconlusion' which gives the watcher some clue of what might happen during the trailer. It mentions the release date so people are informed of when the film is out. There only seems top be one female in the trailer and the fact that she is whispereing seems that she has knowledge of something she doesnt want anyone knowing.

Trailer 4

Easy A

There is a constant narrator in the background but it is the main character of the film 'Emma Stone' she is directly talking to the audience 'you' and keeping you involved in the plot. There is a constant fun song in the background giving you some indication of the genre of the film and the general feel to the film. It is quite past pace cutting from shot to shot very quickly andi t gives you snippets of the filmm so you can get the gist of the plot but not giving it too much away.

Trailer 3

10 Years Later

You can tell straight away that the film is about a reunion from the opening of the trailer, humour is portrayed as he hits himself in the face when he is int he car, this gives teh audience some indication what the film may be about and what type of genre the film may be. Questions appear throughout the trailer to direct the audience of what might be happening at the time. It is trying to relate to a certain type of audience that may be able to relate to the plot.

Trailer 2

The Big Wedding

The first part of the trailer could repersent that the film may be funny and have sexual tendicies in it, it is clear that religion is part of the film and that it is a main factor in the story lin. Even though ther eis negative parts of the trailer a happy songs always remains in the background. Comman facters that occur in the trailer are humour, love and hate at the same time.

Trailer 1

5 different trailer

The Impossible

This film is about a true story, the tsunami that occurred in 2001 in Thailand, it creates flash backs from the real event and tries to portray the most authentic view of what happened. You can tell that the film will be emotional as some people may die, they do this to try and grab the audience as straight away they are playing on their emotions. From the title of the film it tells us that its going to include action and they may achieve something that is unlikely to happen. The music in the background also creates the emotion and makes you feel sympathetic for the characters. Some parts of the trailer are in slow motion and it makes the audience really concentrate on what is happening. The trailer shows small snippets of action so the audience get an outline view on what the film will be about and persuade you to go see it in the cinema.
